Sabrina Mesko 2000, Ballantine Wellspring, Ballantine Publishing Group paperback, 137 pages. $18.00US *** *** *** Author Sabrina Mesko defines 'mudras' as yoga for the hands. They are relatively simple gestures one forms with their fingers; the power comes from holding this gesture while in a meditative state. Mesko is former ballerina who turned to yoga after a back injury. One of her passions is for mudras, and after reading this book, I can understand why. The first 27 pages of her book is devoted to the history behind hand gestures, a brief 'how and why' of hand yoga, and chakra information. The remaining book is divided into three sections: Soul, Body, and Mind, and the mudras associated to each. The mudras vary from the sacred (bringing universal energy to one's life) to the mundane (steeling one's willpower to stick to a diet). For each mudra, Mesko proves a brief introductory paragraph, then two sets of pictures demonstrating how the mudra should look: a close up of the hands, then a full page image of Mesko doing the mudra. Additionally, she provides chakra and color associations, and a mantra to chant as well. While the pictures are detailed enough to make it easy to imitate each mudra, my only comment is that Mesko wears some pretty bizarre costumes for this book. Its a tad distracting to see Mekso surrounded by daisies wearing a shirt with flying saucer-style sleeves when I'm trying to mudra my way to happiness. That minor complaint aside, the book is a wonderful way to incorportate mudras into one's life. Though it toutes itself as an introductory look at mudras, it is detailed enough to keep one busy for quite a while. Mudras are an effective way to meditate, especially for those who need something to concentrate on. Excerpt from Healing Mudras "Introduction: The History and Art of Mudra" (page 2-3): "Even though I had studied different meditation techings and techniques for many years, it took me a long time to develop a deep understanding of the hand gestures of mudras. Aside from a few very basic mundras used for common meditations, the hundred-plus mudras themselves just weren't being taught. For several years while studying yoga and holistic medicine, I couldn't find any information about mudras. I continued to search, however, and was fortunate to eventually meet wonderful teachers and masters who instructed me in the art of mudra. As the saying goes, when the student is ready, the master will appear..." *** *** *** Recommendation: Buy this book! Whether you are new or experienced with yoga and/or meditation, mudras provide a fascinating twist on both. Mudras are easy and challenging at the same time, meaning this one book can be a valuable guide for a long time. Additionally, mudras are an excellent form of yoga for those who aren't able to do the more difficult poses. (Find your local independent bookstore). *** *** *** For more information...
